Why We Built This

Running a small business means living inside spreadsheets. Profit margins, break-even points, quarterly tax estimates, LLC formation costs by state — the calculations are not complicated, but finding a reliable, free tool that does them correctly is harder than it should be.

Most results when you search for "LLC cost calculator" or "self-employment tax estimator" are either buried inside software you have to pay for, or they're on content sites that haven't updated their state fee tables since 2021. We got tired of that. SME Smart Tools exists because small business owners deserve accurate tools that work in their browser, with no signup and no upsell.

How We Build the Tools

Every calculator on this site is built from primary sources. LLC filing fees come directly from each state's Secretary of State website. Sales tax rates are sourced from the Sales Tax Institute and verified against state revenue department publications. Self-employment tax and quarterly estimate calculations follow current IRS Schedule SE and Form 1040-ES instructions.

We review state-level data quarterly and update figures whenever official sources publish changes. Each tool page notes its data sources in the FAQ section. If you find a figure that looks wrong, we want to know — email [email protected] with the tool name, your state, and what you expected. We check and fix errors within 48 hours.

What the Tools Are Not

These are general-purpose calculators for estimation and planning. They are not a substitute for a licensed accountant, tax professional, or attorney. State regulations change, individual circumstances vary, and some situations involve nuance that no calculator can capture. Always confirm critical numbers with a qualified professional before making formation decisions, filing taxes, or signing contracts.
